I am currently in the same position as you in reverse.
We use a collaboration suite called Kerio Mail Server, has simillar functionality to exchange but far cheaper and easier to manage. The latest release v6.3 has now got Activce Sync functionality. I am currently testing it on an O2 XDA IIs with very good results. See
