Lost storage card data

I am running WM6 on a HTC TyTN2. On my storage card (6Gb) I installed TomTom V5 with European Maps and Anquet Maps V6 (O.S. Maps).

I had been using TT and Anquet successfully and then 'suddenly' and , as far as I could see, for no apparent reason, I started TT but it failed to find the maps. I ran Anquet and it failed to load.
I checked my MicroSD card with File Explorer and found that all the TT folders and the Anquet folders had been deleted plus a number of photographs that I had taken with the inbuilt camera.

I took the SD card out and put it back and did a soft reset but it looks as if the data is long gone. I have now reinstalled all the relavant apps but I am concerned about what might have happened for it to delete these files in case I do it again.
It was not a full hard reset because some data remained - but not anything on the storage card.
Can anyone offer an explanation please?
