Question sat nav systems in VW Passat

Someone told me recently that you cannot use a PDA & GPS sat nav system in a VW Passat because the screen is anti-relective. Is this correct ? Does anyone have experience of this ? My Passat is "51" registered. Thanks

Some cars have a heat reflective windscreen that blocks the GPS signal, so you would require an antenna which could be placed, for example near the rear-view window which isn't shielded.

You can purchase antenna's which sit at the rear window of your car, to pick up the GPS signal.

Thank You.

Thanks for the swift reply. Does the antenna need to be connected to the GPS unit by a wire ? My Passat is an estate so the rear window is quite a way back. Thanks in advance

Hi again, if you were to use a bluetooth antenna then you wouldn't need any wires (bluetooth works over distances of about 10 meters so works great in cars) the only time you would need a wire is to charge the unit.

Thanks

J,
It depends on the type of GPS receiver you use, If it's the cabled type you may need a re-radiating attenna, whigh you can fix on the rear parcel shelf, if not do as Donald sudgested and the bluetooth will work fine.

This problem is quite common on modern cars which have heated windcreens, such as Ford, Renault etc.
