Make a full backup of the device to your PC by copying all the files and folders from the unit using Windows Explorer.
Download and install the latest version of TomTom Home software to your PC, try Here

Update the application on the device using Home, this will probably have to be performed twice, the first part updates the device to 8,300 and the second time you run the update it will take the device to 8,302 which is currently the latest available. To check the software and map versions on the device tap the sat strength meter (lower right corner) then the version box, the resultant page offers lots of information about the device.

With the device running the latest software connect it to Home and this time press Tools/ Use Latest Map Guarantee which should download and install the current latest map for free, the new map is v825.

With the device fully upto date you need to make another backup of the device to your computer, again usew Windows Explorer for this.

All the above is done for free, once you have the latest map consider joining the map update scheme which is a cheper way to get the next four map updates - Mike

Just received my TT 720 refurb from www.totalpda.co.uk.

Can anyone advise me what version of firmware and maps it's shipped with?

Am I allowed to upgrade the maps and firmware to the latest without cost?

Will it be safe to try and upgrade to Lane assist?

Can I (an how do I) upgrade it to TT 730 spec?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm new to sat navs, this being my first purchase.

thanks in advance.

It could have anything on it, switch it on and tap the sat strength meter in the bottom right corner of the screen followed by the version box, the resultant screen will tell you the software version and map version installed to the unit.

Yes, you update the application to 8,302 followed by the map using LMG and its all free the first time you do this providing its within the 30 days from purchase date. See my post earlier in this thread for exact details on what to do and the order in which to carry things out - the Windows Explorer backup being the most important BEFORE you do anything else with the device.

Once the app and map are updated you will have lane assist and reality view, these functions work fine on the 720.

Follow the instructions in my earlier post within this thread, once updated you have a device that is as close to a 730 as is possible without spending twice the cash - Mike

mikealder, thanks for your comprehensive answer!

I also queried the map update with www.totalpda.co.uk and have been told that my unit was shipped with maps v7.15.1703, and that the map can "only be updated if you purchase the latest maps from TomTom".

It's a real disappointment, my only option is to return the unit....

Would be interested to hear from others with similar experience when buying TT refurbs from www.totalpda.co.uk.

Unless the uint was sold as having the latest maps, or came with a latest map guarantee (LMG), then you'd have to pay for the latest maps.

As Mike says, LMG must be accepted within the first 30 days of device use. If it came with one, you'd have a card with a code in the box.

TBH map changes take a long time to filter through. Some road changes from upto 3 years ago are only just appearing.

Have you tried updating the unit and just use the LMG option in TomTom Home, if it works you get the latest map, if it doesn't well you have lost nothing for trying. Only try this after making sure you have the latest version of TT Home software on the PC and the latest Navcore application on the device (currently 8,302).

I wonder if TT have altered the policy on the refurb units recently then? as these devices used to get the LMG, if this no longer applies then a new build 730 is looking more atractive on cost grounds IMHO - Mike

It looks like tomtom have altered the policy. Unfortunately we're now getting some units that are not covered by the LMG. The description has been removed from the website.
