740 start-up

I have a 740 buried in the (ex) ashtray. I can get it to turn off with the ignition but not to turn on. I was assured by the TomTom stand at the NEC last weekend that all I need to do is go to 'power settings' and select 'hard wired' and all will be well. No such setting exist (that I can find). Any ideas or other options on this please as I cant reach the start button without dismantling half the dash.

You can only get a TomTom 740 to auto power OFF, it isn't possible for it to perform an auto ON function, you were told a load of rubbish by their staff - Mike

Thanks Mike. Looks like some sort of mechanical remote button pusher needed then.
