Default TT 910 Go...Screen Freeze

I was hoping that this thread wouldn't be sent so soon after receiving my TT 910...

Last night my TT froze out 4 times in 20mins..!!

I got a frozen screen which showed a lot of fuzziness similar to a tv without a proper reception..this was from the top of the screen going 3/4 way down, the bottom bit showed my "splash screen"... (roughly the same size as the task bar infact)

This is not something i would expect after only having the item less than 72hrs !!

Anyone got ideas on this ??

Strangely i did notice it did the same thing when i disconnected TT from the dock when attached to the PC. I used the "safe to remove device" mode... then the screen went fuzzy..

Is this a fault or some sort of saftey feature to ensure the unit doesnt "crash" ???

havent found much online to give any clues !!

Rgds

Paul

Just found this

TomTom Go 910 GPS Car Navigation System - Support Forum - eXpansys Inc

a known problem for over 4yrs in total..

my concern now is that i didnt do a backup from when i took it out of the box...

only from when i did the updates !! this appears to be where the problem lies...!!

not exactly a happy bunny at the moment !!

Paul, has the unit behaved this way all the time since the update or was it working normally post update and then failed after a few power on/ offs?

As you have a Windows Explorer backup from post update I would format the device (FAT 32 and don't check the box for "Quick Format") then re-install the backup - Mike

Mike,

It worked ok on Tues Night whilst on road.

Then last night it went haywire !! post update..after few power on/off's

Also, it seems to go fuzzy when disconneting from the pc..!!

I've changed the splash screen and the fuziness aint as bad but still there !!

Spoke to TT Support, ran few things they suggested, namely reset, remove application etc then re-install application but the problem still there even ran scandisk from Windows..!!

Default Update

Mike,

TT Support said there appears to be a fault in unit..
Tried "fixes" lost all files and unit wasnt recognised on pc..

Spoke to www.totalpda.co.uk Cusotmer services, unit being returned for exchange..

This fault manifested itself initially after doing updates on TT Home...then when Go 910 was disconnected from PC the screen went fuzzy..appears to be worse if you change the splash screen from the default.

Is there some issue with disconnecting from the PC ?
Software error in TT Home Version 7 ??
Docking issues in general...??

Apart from the above i was impressed by the 910, but this fuzzy screen problem is over 4 yrs old..!!

Surely this should have been rectified by now...??

Rgds

When you get the replacement make a full Windows Explorer back up BEFORE you do anything else with the device. For your account with TomTom Home use a different e-mail address otherwise Home and the servers get really confused, I simply make something up thats in the e-mail format as the e-mail address used doesn't have to work! "ascot54@blueyonder.co.uk" will be fine as would ascot54@dotnet.com (neither of which exist).
Do you still want the LoquendoTTS files on disk as it seems a waste putting that in the post with these latest developments? - Mike

Default Latest Update

Mike,

Thanks for your help on this matter..
I will defo make a back up before anything..!!

Any advice on which files are safe to delete to increase free space..??

I'm not put off by this little saga, i know some people are only too keen to "slag" off a company when things like this happen, however, both TT and www.totalpda.co.uk have so far been first class in their response to this problem.

From a customer point of view though, maybe a better idea would be for Total Pda to do the updates of the application before shipping, but then again this may have its own problems.

Talking of applications. One thing i did notice yesterday was that before the TT hard drive lost everything, there was 2 Applications loaded to it..!!
The first update was circa 9mb the 2nd was 16.8mb.... is this normal to have 2 applications installed or are you meant to delete an old one first..?? i'd have thought the Home would have overwritten or deleted the previous application..!!

Guess i have a lot to learn with TT Go 910..
One other thing i couldnt find on the 910, how do you change the default pointer to one of the installed car graphics...??
My step daughters TT Start has it in the main menu, under car preferences i think it is, the 910 didnt have that option..

As for the Loquendo files, think after i do a back up i wont be needing them, but again thanks for the kind offer. (maybe hold them in reserve for me lol).

Thanks again Mike for your assistance this week.
Greatly appreciated.

Rgds

I am not too sure the 910 has ever had custom car icons available, in fact having checked the latest download for the 910 it doesn't have the required art/ cars folder structure so I guess it won't support this.

There shouldn't be more than a single Navcore application installed to the device and the Navcore installation comprises of numerous files so I am a little unsure how you think it had two sets installed? can you remember the file names?

Now for easy bit

The 910 contains a 20GB hard drive so there is a fair bit of free space to start with (around 12GB unused), but you can free up plenty more by using Windows Explorer to delete files/ folders from the device AFTER you have made a full back up using Windows Explorer (don't rely upon TT Home to back up a 910 as it makes a mess of the LoquendoTTS folder and all its contents).

Each country that has TTS support contains folders for each country so open the LoquendoTTS folder and if all you want is the UK files delete the following folders:

Dutch
EnglishUS
French
German
Italian
Portuguesept
Spanishes

Unless you want to use the device over in North America consider removing the North_America map folder from the device, you can always put it back on the device at a later point.

Open the Voices folder and delete all the files except:

data04.chk (This is Tim UK Voice)
data04.vif
data05.chk (This is Jane UK Voice)
data05.vif

Open the Raster folder and delete all its contents, these files are the aerial view images used when you zoom all the way out in Browse Map mode and aren't needed for normal use.

If you do all of the above your free space on the internal HDD should be around 17,5GB if you need more than that consider putting the UK&ROI map on the device and removing the Wester_Europe folder as this would get you around 19,3GB of free space - Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your response..
Although im PC savvy i've never done any form of backup via Win Explorer..
i'll googole it when the replacement arrives...

i'm a firm believer in deleting what is really not required...but i will take your expertise on board and will go through my 910 with a fine tooth comb.

with regards to the car art folder...
with i loaded TT Home, it showed up the Art folder and it contained the default arrow and also a red mini style car..
guess there is a glitch there then..

as for the 2 applications, again i found this in TT Home.
1st was called TT910 Application circa 9mb... 2nd was called the same and was around 16.8mb............

i thought this odd as surely if i had done an update, then surely it would be overwriting the previous or again is this another glitch ??

Again your assistance greatly appreciated..
