Question Very basic newbie question

I'm thinking of buying the Tom Tom 300.

If I'm just jumping in the car for a day of unplanned travelling - as opposed to a destination where I know the postcode - will the Tom Tom simply keep showing me my current location or does it need a destination in the first place?
Apologies if this is mindnumbingly easy as a query and if it is answered elesewhere.

if you dont plan a route it will follow you where ever you go, if you cross the see if will still know where you are but not have any map data to show your location (hope this makes sense).

Many Thanks.

Since I'm only planning to use it in the UK that sounds great for the occasional mystery tour.

Regards.
