Question tom-tom 3 loosing sat fix

Hi to you all. I am new to Sat nav (got a Ipaq 3715 + Bluetooth tomtom 3)
tried it out the other day on a trip back from Edinburgh to Selkirk but it lost track twice on the way back, once on the ring road and once halfway down the A7. Had to stop and recalc new trip in both cases. (loads of satelites picked up by the GPS by the way once started again). Any ideas of what to do to prevent this from happening again.

Also, is there a easy way of setting preferences regarding roads etc, ie this trip was worked out by the shortest route which in not always the way I prefer to travel (ie tend to stick to main roads most of the time). In this particular case it was OK as I 'ignored' the instructions and it very quickly re-routed me as expected. Mind you it got confused in one place where it showed the road to go left out of a town but told me to turn right...

I have used the 'roadblock' function which is fine as an option but how I am I to know should I be in France....

Any suggestions welcome.

When you say it lost track do you mean it froze and had to be reset, or just did not know where it was ?

As to prefering which roads to travel on , you can adjust the set speeds on the roads,

I tend to run motorways & Primary roads at -5 from default and minor roads at -15. from default.

You do have to keep an eye on the route summary when it initially calcs to make sure you are happy with the route selected.

Thanks Chris,
It froze up showing 'route to started/activated'.
I thought that it had lost track/sat fix but maybe it just hang on me, bit of a pain. (maybe the IPAQ courtesy of Microsoft) had something to do with this but I have read some reviews of the TOM-Tom ( check out the review on www.pocketgps.co.uk) where this 'occationally happens'.
re speed settings, if set lower than one would drive will activate the 'safe mode' hence not showing the route 'live'.
