Unhappy tomtom waiting for signal

I just got the tomtom navigator 2004. I have a toshiba e335 w/the 2002 operating system. My gps says, "the gps signal was lost x time ago". It won't connect. The gps green light flashes about once per second. The software seems to work fine. I was told it takes longer to connect the first time, but after one hour of driving around I gave up.
Tomtom provides no trouble shooting advice on their site or in the owner's manual. I emailed them and they said something to the effect that the toshiba is not a good machine and I should call them for support. I will call them, but I'm wondering if anyone here can help.

Thanks,
steve laser

I take it you are using wired GPS.

go onto the GPS selection and make sure the correct serial port is selected, normally it is comm1

I should say my gps is a tomtom wired one, so when I go to the pocket pc tomtom software and choose "configure gps", I just choose "tomtom cable gps", and it gives no further options. If I choose "other cable nmea gps" it says "gps is connected to com1: infrared port, IrDA, Serial on USB". I have no idea how to choose a com port, or what settings I should tweak to get some response.

Thanks for your help!
Steve

Success! I downloaded the latest version of microsoft activesync, v3.8, sync'd my pda, connected and it started working right away. Apparantly v3.8 is the key. I had v3.5 previously. Hope this helps someone in the future.

As of a few days ago the gps stopped working. Tomtom says that the toshiba is to blame, it has something to do w/the port not communicating w/the sofware. All the components work, that is, my pda is charging, the light is on the receiver and the cigarette lighter adapter's light works. I guess I need a new pocket pc and a new car kit.

Hi
I am experiencing the same problem as you with a HP RX17XX model. Mine has been working OK although took 15-20 minutes to first find signal but this weekend I was driving for over an hours and still didn't find the GPS signal. It was the same on the way home. I have tried to ring TomTom but after holding in a queue for over an hours gave up.
Did you mange to sort it out as I would really appreciate some advice.

Sorry you're experiencing probs, mariegodbeer. Are you in europe or the us? I called tomtom from the us (they answered the phone quickly a couple times, and once I had to leave a message and they called me back w/in a couple hours) and they told me that the toshiba is a bad pda for gps. Mine was 3 years old and on the downside of it's career so I asked tomtom what my options were. They recommended I get a dell. I did so, and so had to exchange my tomtom wired car kit for a dell wired car kit. I'm still waiting for the car kit and am praying that it will work.
I don't know how old your model is, but I know that HP makes good pda's. Did you try a soft reset? Try contacting tomtom thru email or phone and give them another chance. I had a good experience communicating to them, although they shouldn't market their product for the toshiba or any other pda that they don't have good experience with.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Steve

Hi there,

I used to have a very similar problem, that is, i could never find a signal. Are you sure that your car does not have a coated windscreen? I have a peugeot 307 and when i moved the receiver to the rear view mirror, the tomtom started working immediately.

I'm sure it's not the windshield. The unit worked for a few days then stopped. Tomtom took it of it's list of compatible pda's.

Update: Sorry I took so long. Got the axim x30 mid and the tomtom car kit for it. It worked w/in 30 seconds the first time I plugged it in, and it's been 100% perfect since. I am a very happy driver.
