Unhappy Dell Axim X5 freezes with Tom Tom Navigator

when i connect my Dell Axim x5 into the in-car cradle (which connects it to the power source and my wired tomtom navigator receiver) and try to launch Tom Tom Navigator the Dell Axim X5 freezes and i have to take it out of the cradle to do a soft reset to get the PDA working again. when i reconnect it to the cradle it and try to launch tomtom it freezes everytime.

i have no problems in launching the Tom Tom Navigator when the PDA is not in the in-car cradle but that is no good as the PDA can only connect to the tomtom receiver through the cradle.

there is no problem with the power.

i had the in-car kit changed but the problem remains

i use a 128 MB CF card for the maps.

could anybody help please?

Hi,

What version of the TomTom Navigator are you using? Is it an upgrade or a fresh install?

Andrew, before I got a pda I called tomtom and asked them which was best. They recommended the axim x30 over the x5 series. They said it would work on the x5 but that certain rom updates had to be made. At the time I didn't know what they meant, but I got the x30 and it's been great. I suggest you do any rom updates first, and if that doesn't work, call tomtom. Their customer service is good. Once when I called I left a message and they got back to me w/in a couple hours. Their email response is good, too. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

The Operating System of the PDA is stored as ROM data on the onboard ROM chip (read only memory) Upgradeing the OS isn't as simple as doing it on a desktop PC as you have to flash the ROM chip on the pda to wipe the old contents and put the new OS on there with it's new updates and fixes.

Dell would issue say for example a ROM update for their machine and advise you install it. But if for example you have PPC 2002 installed and want PPC 2003 then again you'd have to use the PPC upgrade ROM.

Crucially though you can't put any old PPC 2003 rom on there it has to be one specially written for the precise model of PDA you are using..
