Default TT5 is a huge disappointment to TT3 user.

Hi, I'm a new member...I hope a short review/warning over the TT5 is OK here...see if you agree/disagree. Perhaps I'm missing the odd solution here and there.
I was very happy with TT3 for the last year. Great product.I never had any problems; loved the features. I did 24 000 miles with it up and down the country; I'm a sales rep in a lorry, driving on many smaller roads as well as the M's.
However I am unhappy with TT5 after purchasing the upgrade from Tom Tom.com.
The massive number of features that are gone is not acceptable.

They mentioned a few of the features would be gone, but didn't mention...

No "memorize position" feature (extremely useful for me, for quick temporary locations that I'll never need again after a day or 2)

No way to assign TT5 features to PDA hardware buttons, like before.

No way to easily access PDA functions while running TT5, like before.

4 steps to exiting program, rather than 2, as icons cannot be re-arranged, like before.

I drive a 54 MPH lorry....with TT5 all my ETA's are far too early as I can't change highway speeds, like before. This they did warn us about, but why the devil would they remove this feature?! This was a great feature...during heavy traffic one could reduce speeds for different roads...fantastic! I miss TT3. I can't go 69 MPH on any motorway, EVER. I need to reset Motorway speed. I expect I'm not alone here folks.

TT5 jumps around like crazy when pulling out of a parking space...useless. In Stoneleigh yesterday it continually lost the plot and threw me into farmers fields, recalculating over and over. I have worked this area many times with TT3, no problems.
For the first time in a year, I had to pull out the AA map! Unbelievable.

Browse map screen doesn't auto-zoom to postion. There is no option for this, like before.

There is no switching off of auto-zoom in Nav mode, like in TT3

the POI "rest area" doesn't even show in NAV mode!!! Also no way to keep "rest area" on first page of POI's!!!!

The nice little TT3 4-point compass has been replaced by a tacky looking blue arrow, with only one cardinal point, north.

They did warn us that there would be no "navigate to GPS co-ordinates" and I never thought much about it until one of our lorries broke down and all the driver could tell us from HIS sat-nav was "unknown road" in West Sussex near the A23,... or he could have given us the LAT LON!!! ...D**n! That's what that was for! Another great feature sacrificed for
what? Postcodes that still need a house number? M6 toll road which should have been on TT3 anyway!? Street names in Nav Mode? well that one IS nice...

The list actually goes on and on. It's a whole new program and is not as enjoyable to use as TT3. It even looks "cheaper" with the ETA, SPEED and TIME digits hard to read. It "dims" when my PDA screen is touched and is harder to see in sunlight.

All in all, I hate it, sorry.

Therefore I am requesting a full refund and a re-activation of my TT3.
I was advised by TT BY EMAIL that this would be promptly done, as long as I decided within 14 days.
I have tried the product extensively up and down the country for the last week and just don't like it as much as TT3.

I agree with most of your sentiments as I too have upgraded from TT3 and they seem to have sacrificed many of the crucial features for very little gain. 7 digit post coding does not work on mine at the mo (but thats not TT's fault it's another story!) however, I too am a little disappointed that they have reduced the size of the writing for ETA, distance etc as it's hard enough driving without trying to work out when you will get to your destination through a magnifying glass.

The fact you cannot change your average speed is also a feature I miss as the predefined ones make the whole thing useless at calculating arrival times if the speeds are all wrong (ie always doing 29mph in a 30 mph and 69 mph in a 70 mph zone is impossible on most of our roads and motorways)

One thing I would add to your comment though is that these things are rarely perfect 1st time around so maybe some updates will be released soon to allow some of the key features of TT3 to be returned.

I would like to give my opinions on some of these items above (altho i'm sure people will agree and disagree with any opinion posted):

1. You can save your position by clicking on add favourite, then clicking on next page and clicking on GPS position, give it a name and hey presto.

2. You should be able to start tomtom by assigning a buttom on the front of the PDA through start, settings, buttons. (is this what you meant?)

3. If you press the home button on your PDA it should come out of navigator and jump back to the today screen. If you press the contacts button or the appointments it should come out of navigator and straight into those sections.

4. You can re-arrange to tt menu so the exit button could be one tap away. There is a thread about this on the site. I'll post it when i find it.

5, 6, 7, 8:Couldn't agree more.

9. If you go into your POI's, then enable / disable POI and put a tick next to rest areas they should show on navigation mode (they do on mine).

10. Agree about compass

11. Agree about lat / lon

12. You don't have to put in a number with a postcode, if you put in the postcode and press done when it asks for a number, it will direct you to the postcode only.

13. You should be able to change the backlight in the PDA settings.

I agree that the product does have its faults but TT3 is not perfect. There are also a lot of fixes and tips on differing forums (but why should you have to use them, I know).

I'll check back for the tip on Exiting with one tap, thanks.
Have not been able to get a reply from TT on switching back to TT3. Who am I kidding?
Looks like I'll have to adapt....until TT6 which I expect is closer than we think.

The "memorize this" was handy for locations that I only needed for a day or 2, like a restaurant close to the hotel, an interesting looking canal walk spotted while driving by etc etc., and then never again. Don't want to make a favorite every time.
Know what you mean though.

I've been using postcodes for homebase and B&Q stores...suprisingly they don't always closely match the street addresses...this may be down to the size of these commercial lots. Nice for residential, although it occurs to me that it's a bit silly not to have at least the street and number of where one is headed anyway ;-)

TT5 changes (resets) ones PDA power settings...tons of posts on Pcket GPS world Re this. Apparently the "improved" map scrolling, using 4 times-a-sec updating (interpolating the one-a-sec gps) causes PDA processors to overwork...known bug.

Have taken your advice on 2 and 3, thanks.

Lastly though, and perhaps this may BE a bug (my first one!!)
I can get POI's to show on the NAV screen, as you described, yes...
BUT...NOT rest areas!
These are the only POI's I like to use, as a lorry driver. Yes, they do show on "map" but not on NAV!
I can get petrol on both no problem, but not rest areas...

Someone else try it if you get a chance and post back, mebbe I'm crazee
Luposa says they show on his/hers
but they really don't on mine...I can switch back and forth to map (there they are) to NAV (there they are, gone) to map (aha!) to NAV (Arghh)

You know, I'm gonna keep my TT5 because in the long run it will probably turn out to be better, or at least more interesting

As promised here is the link to the forum & thread about changing the menus. It is supposed to work but I have not tried it myself yet. Let me know if you do before me.

I have just found an easier alternative place to create your own menus.
Try this

http://www.skux.net/tomtom/menubuilder2/index.php

Looks easy enough.

JP,
You mentioned that the the ETA, SPEED and TIME digits are hard to read. Try to enable only max 2 readings for instance only time to arrival and remaining distance. The digits are then much bigger. You can do this using the menu preferences-> status bar preferences.

Good luck,
Fred
