| | how to install tom tom 5 on my pda Hi, I have recently bought a secondhand hp ipaq H2210 pda from ebay. it was preinstalled with tom tom 3 program. I was also supplied with a 128 mb sd card with uk map. Now I want to use tt5 instead.
can anyone kindly me tell me if I buy the tt5 software, what are the procedures to install it in my pda ( do I have to delete the tt3 ) and how can I delete the tt3 in my sd card and replace it with the tt5 map . ( will 128 mb be big enough to hold the tt5 map )
the main reason why I want to use tt5 is because I notice the uk map in tt3 is not updated. if I want to save the hassle, is there a website for me to download the latest uk map on my tt3.
please help, cheers |

| | If the tt3 is a genuine copy then you should be able to just buy the upgrde version from tomtom which would be much cheaper....they are much quicker at delivering now (I got mine within a week).
You wouldn't need to delete tt3 from your PDA, just upgrade it.
After upgrading you will upgrade the maps but, 128mb wouldn't be enough space so you would need to delete the maps from your sd card before you could put them on (just look for the Great Britain maps dir) as tt5 doesn't overwrite the old maps.
As far as I'm aware you can't apply the new maps to tt3. |

thank you for your quick reply. v,. helpful of you ... When you say 128 mb card is not big enough, do you mean not enough to hold the whole europe map but enough to hold uk one please ?
I would like to get some advice from you. I was offered to buy a 256 tt5 sd card at about £25, and was told to just insert the new card in my pda and it will work just fine with my preinstalled tt 3 program. Do you think it is cheaper and simplier than to upgrade it and have to delete the old map from the sd card and then have to put the new map. My tt3 is a geninue copy. How much have you paid for your upgrade please ?
thanks

| | Hi
Personally I would steer clear of buying the tt5 256mb SD card that you've been offered for £25, it has to be a 'dodgy' copy which will probably cause you no end of problems.....there is no way that tt5 maps are going to work with tt3 (happy to be proved wrong though if anyone knows otherwise).
You can order a proper upgrade from the tomtom website for 69 euros inc delivery and you get all of the cd's...is it really worth all the problems you could encounter with a 'dodgy' copy for the sake of saving £20 or so, I don't think so ;-)
When you get the cd's it says in the instructions to delete your old maps before installing the new ones so when you have removed them you will have no problems in installing the v5 maps onto your 128mb SD card....thats if you are going to do just the GB maps, I think you need about 111mb for GB.
If you want more maps installing than just GB then you will need to buy a new SD card..they have come right down in price (I have just bought a 512mb one with next day delivery for £22). |

| | btw....I'm using an ipaq 3870 with a BT77 bluetooth GPS and the upgrade from tt3 went very smoothly...I've since driven all over the UK with it and experienced no problems so far.....the postcodes facility is excellent :-)
If you do the upgrade then make sure you download the v1 upgrade from TomTom....thats the only update I've applied. |

| | Hi Birky,
Thank you for your advice. I agree totally with your idea of upgrading to tt5 as my tt3 is a genuine copy. However, I have read articles posted by other members in the forum and found out it seems quite of lot of people got quite disappointed after upgrading to tt5 or encountered various problems during or after installation. As I am a newbie to using pda & nav system, do you think I should be wise to stick to tt3.
On the other hand, I saw one of the post is about download checkpoints and speed camera functions for tt3. can I ask what checkpoints means. and would you agree to do it ? are they good ? thanks again for your help. |

| | Checkpoint is a program that runs together with tomtom. This has a database with all of the speed cameras on it and will warn you when you approach one. I believe that checkpoint was excellent for tomtom 3 but there is also checkpoint for tomtom 5 now and thus this would give you no problems. There are some reported problems with tomtom 5 but a lot of these are personal preferences that people would like to see (can't please everyone can you???). Any major issues can be resolved by looking on this forum. If it is speed camera warnings you are after, try here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-go-poi-alerts.php
This is an excellent database updated approx once a month (and its free).
I do think it would be worth while upgrading as you get the updated maps which will come in handy when travelling. |

| | HI Birky,
Thanks for your advice again. it's v. helpful of you. Can I ask when you say after upgrading to tt5, I can access to updated uk map. How about the existing tt3 users with geunuine copy ( those with product code and no., ), can they too have access to updated map in tom tom website please ?
I noticed that the tt3 uk map I am using is very outdated. Otherwise, I am quite happy with tt3 , so I think it would be excellent that this updated thing is available to tt3 users.
Thanks once again for your help

| | You would have to update to tt5 to access the updated maps. As far as I know, the updated maps do not work on tt3.
To access the update, just go onto the tomtom website and click on the upgrade. The cost is 59 Euros and for that you will get tt5 program, updated maps (All of Europe). |

| | Hi
As lupos says, you will need to purchase the V5 upgrade from tomtom.com, you will then get a full set of new cd's sent to you, you will need the v5 software to use the new maps.
The upgrade was quite painless for me....it is true though that some people have experienced some problems but, I think that this is down to hardware issues or as lupos says personal preferences on features.
I would definately just order the upgrade discs if I was you....69 euros is not a lot of money for the upgrade compared with buying the full verson. | |
