Default Help.. Activation Code/ Device Code problem

I have been using tt nav5 since August last year. I am now on my 3rd phone. My initial activation and subsequent reactivation in January this year went fine but i cannot re-activate on the new handset. I see from the other threads it is probably to do with a 6 month rule.

I have emailed tomtom for assistance several times through their site and I have faxed tomtom with my problem and details (as set out by one of the forum members in another useful thread-thank you) but nothing.

Are tomtom likely to ignore me and if so how else can i get my legal copy of tomtom working?

dmmeys, you're not alone. I too have had to replace two handsets (both faulty) and have run foul of TomTom's ridiculously tight license.

Don't they realise that people upgrade handsets? Wouldn't you run foul of the same problem if you simply took advantage of a yearly upgrade?

How would it be if Microsoft insisted you bought a new copy of Windows every time you had to have your hard drive replaced because of a fault?

I'd appreciate it if you could post back here with how you get on...currently I've got the same "fax us loads of information" response that you mentioned above.

Martin - many thanks for the phone number...I'll be on to that next.

Funny you should say that. You're not far from the truth as far as the new os Vista is concerned.

Gah, the world's gone mad. In five years' time, they won't even allow you to log in yourself...you'll have to ring Bill Gates direct, and one of his minimum-wage flunkies will run a copy of Windows for you on a Pc that has never left Microsoft's offices, and you'll have to tell them over the phone that you want to open outlook to get your friend's phone number.

Of course you'll then be told that they can't give you that information due to the data protection act.

I'm not a pirate, hacker or terrorist. I just want to use what I bought without having to jump through all thes damned hoops.

Indeed. Some companies are going OTT and justifying people using cracked/illegal versions - the very thing they don't want!

It's the whole MP3 argument. I prefer a hard copy of my music so I can take it with me in the car etc. Just because I've borrowed music from a friend, I'm more likely to buy it and add to my own collection than simply ripping it and saving the cash. And the albums I buy then have copy protection, so I can't load onto my MP3 player - they expect me to buy ANOTHER, electronic copy!

Funny that... just looking for the phone number I'd been provided last year and came accross my original thread... the saga has continued. I'm now on my 5th M2000. they have generally broken withina couple of months of getting them. I have now had to contact tomtom on several occassions to get new activation codes. The latest email was yesterday. They replied to me and referred me to their license agreement!

"TomTom would like to clarify that TomTom software and maps can only be installed and used on one device only as explained in the TomTom Licence Agreement, stating that the licence agreement is not transferrable which you accepted before installation of your software.

If you are unable to activate your product again through the help of our website www.ttcode.com, may we ask you to please fax any proof of purchase regarding repaired or replaced devices, in addition explaining the need for activation. Alternatively, you can update your question on our customer support website, and attach a scanned copy of your documents to this incident. "

MMmmmm. I think they might be insinuating I am installing it all over the place. Indeed, as an international terrorist I have been able to fund countless acts utilising the vast sums I've collected from installing it on 4 handsets so far..... (all the time updating them with the handset numbers!)

In addition to the above I've had to send them a letter from Orange CONFIRMING they have replaced the handsets due to faults. All I need now is a letter from my mum and I'll be sorted!

The latest reply has now asked me to provide the documentation for each and every handset replacement AND my original sales invoice. God help me if i was remotely normal and hadn't filed it like the OCD freak that I am! Or heaven forbid had received a tomtom product as a gift.

It is a joke. They put barriers up on the website so that you can't contact them.. how difficult is it to just put a big 'contact us' button on the damn screen?

When you jump through all of their hoops to get your piece of overpriced software re-activated they make up new rules or think of things to ask for that most people would just give up at.

If I wasn't so bloody minded I would have. I'll certainly be buying non tomtom next time 'round.

Incidentally, When the phone broke in October last year I had Orange replace it free of charge with a lovely M3100. Contacted tomtom.... M3100 not supported. why don't you buy Navigator 6!

Muppets.

I feel better now.

PS: they still haven't replied to my updated question with all of the orange letters and a scan of my totalgps invoice...rubbish.
