Having real trouble with h1940 & navigator 2

Hello all
I am hoping one of you will be able to help me I have been given a h1940 with tomtom navigator 2 gps. I have followed the instructions online to the letter and I still cannot get a gps signal all I get is gps unreliable... I have been trying for 2 days and have left it out in the garden with a clear view of the sky for 2 hours at a time.

Please help before I throw the blooming thing in the bin
