Default Upgrade to Destinator 6 or TOM TOM 5 for PDA

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me out with my questions.

I am very new to Sat Nav and have an Acer N35 PDA with Destinator Lite software. So far I have managed to find out that in order to download either POI or Speed camera databases I will have to upgrade as Destinator Lite is not designed for this and has no POI, favourites or much else other than the basics.

From what I have managed to find out, I should be thinking of upgrading to either TOM TOM Navigator 5 for PDA’s or Destinator 6 for PDA’s. I have read that some people believe the Destinator software uses a better Satellite tracking system.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has installed either of these software options to an Acer PDA or any other PDA and would appreciate comments on the following:

  • What do you really like and dislike about the software?
  • Is it reliable?
  • Have you managed to download POI and speed camera databases and do they work?
  • Are the POI and speed camera databases free or do you have to subscribe and if so how much and is it annual fee or for life fee with free updates?
I am very confused about all this and have read that it is harder to get POI and speed camera databases to work with Destinator but I am not sure why and what the issues are at the moment. I would appreciate any views about these two software options as I have to decide which to buy for my PDA.

Many thanks for your help.

All i can say is i have tried most but always go back to tomtom, it could be more to do with i use a hx4700 and it has a vga screen and tomtom detects this so looks quite nice on my pda.

There are a lot of sites for poi files for tomtom and the speed camera database is only £2 a month from pocketgpsworld, but i only tend to update it once every 2-3 months. I would also wait if i was you as i belive tomtom is coming out with v6 very soon so hopefully will have very updated maps.

Tomtom is also very easy to use, has favorites and recent destinations, uses postcodes etc. I also prefer it in 2d mode as it shows a lot more of the map and route.

And most Poi's on the web are free, theres even a programme called poiedit which makes it a lot easier to download and copy the poi files to the pda.

Hmmm, just had a look, good site.

I only use the all in one file though and they dont seem to use it, cannot be bothered adding loads seperatly i like the one poi sspeed cam file from pocketgpsworld, but if i used the seperate files i would definetly go there.

Also the other poi's dont use a single file either.

Default Thanks

Thanks for your honest opinion Badgedid,

Since I posted I have found out the Destinator 6 does not work very well on the Acer N35, as its spec is not up to it. So it looks like TT5 for me, although I am interested in waiting for TT6. Any idea when this might be out? Trouble is, it will of course be expensive so have to take that on board too.

I can use my Destinator Lite for the time being, but was very interested to get a Speed camera db and POI but these can wait. Just have to hope no cameras get me in the meantime! Now thats done it...I bet I get caught soon now I have said that!!

Anyway, thanks again.

True, but now that checkpoint's compatable with WM5, I can have my voice warnings for each cam type, ability to add/remove cams to update the web DB for others, as well as my speed monitor warning which I've missed since getting WM5.

For free, I can't grumble.
