Unhappy Wired TomTom & Tungsten T3: No GPS Device Error

I have an ongoing problem with TomTom and my Tungsten T3. Nearly every time I try to use it I get a "No GPS device!" error. When it does work, leaving the T3 in the car kit cradle means that it will still work when I put the whole setup back in the car. Unfortunately, this isn't practical when you need the T3 for other things. So, the next time I slot the T3 into the cradle it's almost a certainty that TomTom will report "No GPS Device"

The T3 appears to be correctly inserted, and it reports that the PDA is charging. The GPS receiver flashes slowly to indicate that it is receiving satelites, the correct GPS device is selected, yet TomTom does not see the device.

I do remember hearing that a few people had concerns about the T3 mating correctly with the car kit - although if this was the case, I wouldn't expect the T3 to say that it was charging.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Polaris, click on tom tom, tap on the screen, change preferences, GPS status, top left there is a small circle it should be spinning if it is connected. Double check that you have it setup correctly, by taping on configure. If it does not spin, pull the bottom of the PDA down (so the PDA is extended to full length), at the back there is a small hole tap that it and any money when you go back into tom tom it will have picked up the GPS signal.

I had to repeat those instructions 3 times before they had any effect, but at least we got there in the end. Does anybody know why this is happening, and should I be concerned that it took 3 reboots before the system started working properly?

mine regulary stalls like this -the only way to get the T3 to 'find' the gps is to reset the unit on the back

this also occurs if you leave the on T3/gps in the (hard wired) cradle in the car for a few hours once you've arrived at your destination -i was working from the car all day .....

drive off and the thing is frozen on your last location...again you have to reset the T3

yet another 'problem' ...-and this is supposedly the best combination on the market *sigh*

cheers

What's even more frustrating is that there isn't any mention of this problem on the TomTom website, and I'm still waiting for reply to my request for support. I've already installed the latest software updates, and my hope is that they'll soon have another one to cure this problem. As Richard say's, this is supposed to be the best combination on the market, and having to do between 4 and 8 resets before each journey just is a bit much.

I had the same problem as this (except with a buetooth one). I phoned TomTom on 0845 161 0009 who were very helpful.

They also sent me these instructions which may help you (obviously changing the selection from bluetooth for wired). At least it means the T3 will manually check for the GPS each time - I think so anwyays. it may be a different process for a wired one but I enclose it JIC.

1. Go to the application screen on your T3 and select ‘Prefs => Bluetooth’
2. Make sure Bluetooth is ‘ON’ and the battery of the T3 is charged. (if not charged it is not possible to use Bluetooth)
3. Go to ‘Trusted Devices’
4. If already in the list of Trusted Devices, delete ‘TomTom Wireless GPS’
5. Go to ‘Add Device’
6. Make sure it says: ‘Show: Current Discovery’
7. Turn on the TomTom Wireless GPS receiver and wait until it is recognized by the T3
8. When shown select ‘TomTom Wireless GPS’ in the list and press ‘OK’
9. When connected, type in the passkey ‘0000’ (4 times zero) and press ‘OK’
10. Start up TomTom Navigator
11. Tap the screen to get to the Navigator-Menu
12. Select ‘Show status’ and then ‘Satellites’ in the top right corner of your screen.
13. Select ‘Configure’ select ‘Other Bluetooth GPS’ and press ‘Done’
14. Make sure it says: ‘Show: Current Discovery’
15. Select again ‘TomTom Wireless GPS’ in the list and press ‘OK’
16. Connection will now be established between the two devices.

You will now see a list of all Bluetooth devices around each time you start TomTom Navigator. In order to manually establish a connection to your GPS receiver, you just select ‘TomTom Wireless GPS’ from the list and press ‘OK’. Immediately a connection will be established to the receiver.

I just had my TomTom Nav for T3 delivered and had a horrible time trying to get the TomTom Wired GPS unit to work. I too kept getting the No GPS Device error.

Having tried the simple instructions of using the reset button this didn't have any effect for me on over 10 tries! I have however found a solution that works everytime.

1. Power up Cradle/GPS in your car without the T3 in place
2. Reset the T3
3. Load the TomTom software
4. Place T3 (while still on) into the cradle

Following these 4 steps to the letter works for me everytime.

I too am annoyed that this problem is not even mentioned on the official site and I look forward to them addressing this issue that must obviously be affecting a lot of people!

Chris.

Chris.

I too have just taken delivery of TomTom 3 wired GPS car-kit.

Have not once managed to connect to the TomTom wired GPS device !

have followed the advice given by Chris (see quote) - no success. All very frustrating. have tried soft and hard reset, new Palm T3, upgraded TomTom 3 from version 4.0 to 4.1. NOTHING is mentioned on TomTom WWW support. Have tried phoning TomTom on 0845 161 0009 - I just get to ride the recorded message roundabout, then hung-up on, with the parting line that recommends I should phone back. I am sending my unit back in the hope that it is a hardware problem in the cradle.

Has anyone had a similar experience ?

Sadly, I've just had the same problem with my 3 day old T3 / TomTom combo :-(
The outward journey was fine, but it wouldn't find the wired GPS unit for the whole return trip. Lucky I wasn't too far from home!

Managed to get it working once home again, but not sure how. Has anyone made any progress on finding out why this is happening and how to fix it once and for all?

Gary

Default looks like i have joined a large group

In a way I am glad to find this thread as having sent back one unit as faulty the replacement does exactly the same thing "no GPS device error' the thread however doesn't ease my frustration the whole reason I bought a PDA GPS was the flexibility issue now whenever come back to tom tom it is either a reset (multiple) to get it working or more often than not I have to uninstall the software and then reinstall it in order to get it working

Please somebody tell me that there is a fix for the problem or at least that Tom Tom are working on one

When it works It is great I love the T3 aswell I just want it to work all the time

Is this too much to ask?
