no voices

I have just been given a tomtom one 3rd edition in full working order apart from there are no voices on the device. I have tried installing them but get the following error message:

The damn thing freezes when you try and navigate anywhere too...there was a brief error message on the screen, it said something like "unable to store map data"....

Now I know why it was given to me!
