Default tomtom one v3..silly directions

I recently bought my first satnav and am on a big learning curve!
I have become aware that the sat nav does not always know the best route to get started on a journey and I accept that my superior local knowledge can be easily used by ignoring the unit initially.
However, I am currently having to ignore the unit from sending me on a four road loop in order to finally set off up a road that is in my face as I drive out of my driveway! I cannot re route..via.. this road as it just gives the same information as before.
Is there any way I can teach it? And why does it do this anyway?
It obviously is already aware of this road and its position. Help!

Seems as though the GPS thinks you arent where you actually are, so is trying to get you back on track - if I read your post correctly.

It happens. Coated screens in Vauxhalls, Renaults etc and heated screens in Fords all affect the GPS signal, and a device can easily think it's in the next street. Signal bounce from buildings also plays it's part.

The unit will work it out, but if you're too close to your house when you start out, the bounce, trees and other items blocking the sky view, insufficient GPS signal and (if applicable) your screen could all be affecting you.

Is the time and date on the unit correct?

Thanks for your efforts. Ive tried starting the unit up whilst on foot in various road positions adjacent to my home address but it does not usually give the most logical start direction. I have decided that I should just kick off in the obvious direction from 'home' towards the destination and then let the TT pick up at a later stage. After all, the most important requirement is for it to show the detail of the unfamiliar destination. Its only a machine after all...was I expecting common sense?
The time is set correctly by the way.

Do you have map share enabled?

It could be that the road you want to drive has been blocked on map share for some reason.

Could be that or a map error which you can report to teleatlas.

I have found that the directions given by the unit can be modified to allow immediate allowance onto a direction, by using the via instruction to use ...the crossing of the road on which my house is addressed together with the road opposite my house. The road opposite is not blocked in any way on the maps as can be observed by the fact that as I said initially the directions given, took that road after first taking a loop around the village.
The mystery remains but it is not causing great upset to me as I just take the road initially and proceed on my way! The unit catches up eventually.
If a friend used my unit to take off from my house to some other destination, they would probably be greatly confused and then hopefully amused.
I do have map share enabled but nothing I could report would be significant to share.
Thanks for your efforts.

Remember the Sat Nav only indicates where you are, it doesn't know which direction you are facing. Once you start moving, if you do start off in the wrong direction, it will soon re-route either 'do a u-turn' or take you round the block, whichever is shorter usually.

The problem I get is I park in my rear garden, which is halfway between 'my' road and a cul-de-sac 'around the back', it can lock on to either road but as soon as I get to my road it corrects itself and re-routes.

Thanks for your post..as you say this is only a issue when starting on a journey and as long as it gets me through areas I am not familiar withit has up to now, then all will be well.
