Default No Maps found

Help! Have had my One XL for about a year. Has always worked fine up until yesterday. I went online and purchased a map of France, plugged the unit in and went to upgrade the thing. I am now getting all sorts of bizarre messages. When I connect it to my laptop (Window's Vista), it says the drive is corrupt. I cannot get windows to fix it. If I switch the unit on unconnected to the laptop, it says no maps found.
If I try to download either of the 2 maps I have on my computer (UK and France), it goes half way through, then it hangs. I try to abort and my computer freezes and I have to restart. When I connect automatically and it searches for updates, get an error message which says "unknown exception has been caught". The detail means nothing to me, it is gobbeldegook . Its driving me nuts!
Any suggestions, apart from throw it out the window, would be very welcome. Thanks!

Are you using a computer connected to the internet via WiFi? If so try it again with a wired connection via ethernet/ USB as this is more reliable - Mike

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately now, it seems totally confused. When I plug it in and try to get the computer to converse, (now at work, very fast connection), I just get:

Stick to a single PC your works machine will have a firewall and lord knows what else inbetween your TT and the servers in Holand, this will cause you even more problems - answer the original question does your computer at home use WiFi for internet? if so try again with a cabled (physical) connection - Mike
