No problem with second hand, re-registering the product is not a problem with most companies.
Checking to see if its not stolen is more difficult, if buying second hand make sure all original documents come with it, even better if you get the box too.
Don't buy one in the pub and if you do, get as much information about the person who's selling, address with proof, photo id drivers licence, reg and make of car etc, and where possible go to his/her house as on licence to purchase, and get a signed receipt with address of seller, Serial number and where original purchased.
Much more can be checked, by checking out the unit on PC prior to handing over the cash.
Make sure it has the original CD not a copy, the charger, USB lead etc;
Or just buy a new one from a reputable shop, Halfords, PC world, Curries, Comet....etc;
They are cheap now, TT1's under £199.
