Unhappy Dreaded flashing white cross on Tom Tom 1

Can anyone help please?
TT1 works OK when attached to computer via usb cable. When stand-alone, on start up I get the dreaded flashing white cross on red circle.
This was after connecting and updating software - I did switch off the unit, both on screen and off before starting up on stand-alone.
I have tried resetting both with the paper clip and via software but no luck.
I have also tried reloading software from back-up.
Unit is less than one week old.
Help would be appreciated.

The same thing has been reported on the PocketGPSWorld site by a number of people and the advice, as the unit is only a week old, is to go back to the shop, say 'It doesn't work' and ask for a refund, or replacement, under the Sale of Goods Act 'Not of merchantable quality or fit for it's purpose'. Don't let the shop say they, or you, will have to send it to TomTom for repair. If you get no joy contact the Local Trading Standards Office.

Thanks for responding. I did return the unit this morning (Halfords) and they exchanged it with no problems and "sorry for the inconvenience".
Thanks Halfords.
PS They couldn't make it work either!
