TomTom 1 XL Europe Updates + SD Card

This is my 1st Sat Nav so all new to me i have just tried to update to the New Nav7 via TomTom Home after problems from there 1st update it deleted all Saftey Cameras all back now with new version but when i went to update it could not due to insuf space on TomTom so i deleted items by copying them and then removing them till Nav7 would install then put items back no problems.
But due to this i brought a 2 GB sd card not being able to find any information in manuel or TomTom web site on how to use the card i did this.
When i 1st pushed it in it came up with picture of an SD card with a red cross what could i do so i copied the contents of TomTom 1 backed up my TomTom then conected TomTom with SD card in slot and Dumped copied contence onto SD card dis conected everything switched of TomTom removed SD card pushed it back in and all works fine i now have lots more space Question Is Have i done this the right way also can i now ( not that i want to ) Delete the contents of the TomTom not the SD card to have more space dont ask me what for i dont now yet lol any info would be of great help to me and poss others Cheers
