No speed warnings or display

I recently acquired a TomTom ONE 3rd edition.
It warns me about "safety cameras" but I can't get it to warn me when I'm exceeding the speed limit. I've ticked "Warn when driving faster than a set speed" in safety preferences.
I also have "Show max speed next to speed" ticked in Status bar preferences but no maximum speed is shown on the display. Could this be because TomTom has no info on the roads I've tried, or have I overlooked a setting? I've checked for updates.

Normally this feature only works on motorways and major A roads at this time.

Wife has a V3 too, and the above is true for her.
