Default Queries about tomtom go

Hi,
I've been looking at buying a satnav system for a while and was very impressed by the Garmin. Now that Tomtom have finally brought out this ready-to-use unit at a good price, I'm almost ready to take the plunge. Can I ask a few questions tho?
1. Is the screen as reflective as some postings have led me to believe. And do the fingerprints left on it make it even harder to see in sunlight?
2. Is it possible to use the touch screen with a stylus (old pen or something) instead of your fingers?
3. Will the touch screen still work with fingers if a non-reflective coating or sheet of something was stuck to it?
4. Anyone have an idea as to how to update the maps/software if and when it's needed? Can they be dowloaded on a PC and then uploaded to the unit? Will tomtom release updated maps every couple of years as roads change?

Any answers are welcome!!

Thanks

SAB

Hi SAB - I would be very interested in the answer to your 4th question. I absolutely love my new TomTomGo but have just found that the map is out of date for Reading in Berkshire. It directs me down roads that have been made one way for years! I know Readings roads change like the wind, but the one way system as it stands now is a good 3 years old im sure. I want to know how to get hold of UK map updates and how often they are likely to be issued - will they be free etc as upgrades?

Re your questions re the screen - dont worry about it. This issue nearly stopped me purchasing a Go unit, and im so glad I ignored those reviews that said the screen is pants. The screen is very hard to see in sunlight - but im generally watching the road, not the TomTom screen. With 'Tim' telling me where to go I rarely look at the screen. I dont have a problem with finger prints - it can get a few smudgy areas but it makes it no harder to see the screen in my opionion. I cant see my T610 mobile screen when the suns out either - it doesnt matter too much - the benefits of the TomTom Go unit far outweigh the fact that its hard to see the screen when its sunny.

So far since ive had it its peed with rain most days - I can see the screen no problem at all when its cloudy!!

I hope this helps - go and buy one - it will blow you away!

Michelleski

Wow! That was a fast reply! Thanks Michelleski. A pain about Reading 'cos I drive thru there often - ain't that typical!
Have you tried to use anything other than your fingers on the screen? Just wondering if an old pen top would work?

You can use pretty much any old thing...including pen tops.

I find permanent marker pens not so good however

My only comment about getting the TomTom Go is that for its price (About £450), you could opt for something like a PALM T3 PDA or IPAQ with bluetooth TomTom GPS bundled in. Then you're getting something far, far more versatile for your money.....

Does anyone here know if the actual programme is also contained on the SD card or is it just the map data, 'cos if it's both, how would you update the maps onto the SD card or replace the card with one for another country?

Yep - the OS and the map is on the SD card. You can update both from the included CD.

Okay - for the dummies like me - does this mean that if I bought another SD card with another map to go to say, France, I could load the OS onto the second SD card and in fact have two cards, each with the OS on them but different maps?
