Angry TomTom3 will not install to me PDA

I have recently bought a Compaq Ipaq 3870 PDA running Windows CE. I also bought TomTom3 Sat Nav. I have install Active Sync 3.7.1 (the latest version) and my Desktop PC communicates fine with the PDA.

However, I cannot get TomTom3 to install. All I get is the message "unable to communicate with device". I can't understand this, as I KNOW the device is ocnnected to my PC!

I have tried both hard and soft resets, re-installing Active Sync, setting my PDA up with both a Partnership and as a Guest (this advice was given to me by TomTom Support) and NOTHING works.

Can anyone please help me to get TomTom3 installed onto my PDA??? Cheers

Are you connected as Guest or Standard Partnership

Thats a new one for me what i would do is download the GPS update from there site, see if that does install over to your PDA if it does there must be a problem with the copy of CD (doubtful).

Hi Stevie, I was afriad that no-one else would have come across this problem. I have tried connecting as both a guest and a partnership to no avail. I have also down-loaded the update and this does not work either. I just cannot understand it ? ! ? Any further suggestions you can make would be much appreciated.

If the update does not work then its not the disc, are you using a network PC?? if so check to see if you have the rights needed to install on the PC. If not i would hard reset the PDA if it still fails try on another machine. Or email me and i will take your PDA and tom tom but for install.

I too am having problems installing TT3 onto my PDA, a Jornada 928.

Made a new partnership, now set up keeps displaying the set up window with the two file folders and the sheet of paper moving between the two. It only appears to transfer one file to the Jornada, TomTomNavigator.axs. The setup screen remains in this state. Checking Task Manager, I see the setup.exe running, but no CPU activity. I give up after 30mins, should it take longer than this?

Hi Charlie,

I am using;

- PPC version 3.0.12039 build 11178

- Active sync 3.7.1 build 3244

I have been on to Tomtom tech support and they say that the 928 is not supported by Nav 3. I said you have no problems and they said nothing constructive.

They did send me a new version of setup.exe dated 19-04-04 but when I run that it comes up with a different message (after the install Navigator screen and it is about to install) the message says "Activation Failed" "ok", then says "Set up will go online to activate thesoftware............... do you want to go online yes no" when selecting NO, it says "preparing set up" then back to the paper document moving between the two folders for ever. If I press YES it then says Activation failed, then "Unkown Device Architecture". Then after pressing OK it says "Can not connect to your device, Retry/Cancel"

Do you do anything special when you load TT3 onto your 928's?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ian

- Just deleted the registry setting for Tomtom.
- Re botted my PC and Jornada
- Ran the new set up program again (dated 19-4-04)
- Set up asked for my product code, which I did
- I selected to install without going online to authorise
- Back to the set up install screen with the two folders and a file being transferred between them, now been running for 30mins and no activity on the Task Manager
Help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I doing anything different to what your chaps do when they load the software on to the Jornada 928

Thanks,

Ian

I have had a customer before having the same problem, what we had to do was run msconfig or ctrl alt del and close most of the services and programs running on the PC.
