Default GPS - Free or Not?

Hey, I'm new to all of this so bare with me...
I've recently purchased an O2 XDA II and a TomTom 3 kit (wired)...
I've always understood GPS to be Free ( ? ) however I've noticed that when I plug in my XDA II it says "Dialing GPRS / WAP" (or something along those lines).
Now I'm aware that you have to pay for each piece of data recieved on GPRS, so does this mean that the GPS isn't free and I am infact having to pay some silly bills each time I use my TomTom?
Please help

Nick

GPRS is General Packet Relay Service which is associated with mobile telecoms not GPS. GPRS is what you can use if you want to connect to the internet.

GPS is free at the moment, they are thinking of charging for the service in the future, we access the military satellites to get our locations you access. If you want more info on GPS and GPRS check out our FAQ.
