Question About to buy TomTom to go with XDA2

Hi there I have recently bought an XDA2 with buying a GPS system for it in mind. Tom Tom in particular.

I have a few questions:

1) I am unsure which to go for wired or bluetooth as far as reliability goes. ie XDA2 connecting to GPS reciever consistantly. If one is more reliable than the other then I would prefer to go with that one.

2) If I did get the bluetooth version can I use the Sat Nav and a bluetooth headset to use the phone at the same time whilst driving?

3) If the map (UK) becomes out of date ie new roads built (ie M6 toll) how can it be updated and if so do I get updates for a set period of time or do I have to pay each time? I went to the Tom Tom site but couldnt find out.

4) I am interested in later adding speed camera detection software. Do they all do a similar job or are there any that I should be warry of?

Sorry for the amount of questioning. Any answers would be gratefully appreciated.

Nice One

Mike

You cant get anymore reliable than a physical cable, the Bluetooth signal can drop from time to time.

2) If I did get the Bluetooth version can I use the Sat Nav and a Bluetooth headset to use the phone at the same time whilst driving?

Never tried that but i don’t think it would work as Bluetooth is designed for node to node use (single connection).

Tom Tom only update the mapping software when they realise a new version normally about a year or so.

There are a few free versions out there that users like yourself constantly update, they don’t have every camera but not bad.

Hope this helps if you need anymore help just drop me mail or reply to this again :=)

I have a XDA2 and I use tomtom 3 with a bluetooth tomtom gps reciever.

I have never had a problem with it connecting via bluetooth. My mate also has the same setup and hasn't had any probs either. I would go with the bluetooth setup but makesure that the gps reciever that you buy is compatible. One that definately works is the tomtom one. You can buy the kit (software and gps device) from here for less that £200 if I remember correctly.

I used it last night in my friends car. It was so quick to setup, I placed the gps reciever on the parcel shelf and gave them the xda to use tomtom. worked great and they were so impressed that they are buying one now!

Hope this helps
Rich.

1) I'd Go Bluetooth. Works Great. Cables look awful and make it more awquard to jump in a friends car with.

2) Should have no problems using your Mobile and headset via Bluetooth, Won't get any interference or anything.

3) Updates to TomTom are available and are Free. Although !!! as yet I have not applied or seen a Map update available. I'm Using TomTom3 with latest Updates and driving down the M6 Toll shows me in the middle of fields. But updates are supposed to be posted according to their FAQ section.

4) Go for CheckPOInt for your detection software. It's FREE and works excellent. It'll start TomTom for you. I have my Calander button re-programmed to start Checkpoint. Get in the Car. Turn on the PDA and hit the button. Within ten seconds, TomTom is active, Detection Software is running in the background and I'm not having to connect cables up for the GPS because i'm using bluetooth.

Hey Guys thanks very much for your advice.

Its good in ere innit !!

I have seen a few bad postings about bluetooth and tomtom although I know you can find something bad about anything if you look. You have put faith back in this product for me.

This forum certainly makes me feel more comfortable about buying the kit from www.totalpda.co.uk as opposed to anyone else as I know you know what you are talking about and I know if anything does go wrong I know where to ask questions. When you buy new equipment sometimes you have teething problems. I know where to come.

Thanks ste, dic and pmarl

umm I can't believe I missed this gem :-)

I don't suppose you happen to have a link handy do you for this ?

Cheers

PS> I too have the Bluetooth version (for the Palm T3) and love it. I find the bluetooth very rarely loses the connection and it's fr more adaptable.
