That is a satelite lock. The receiver needs to have a view of at least 3 satellites and that is what gives you a lock. From the sound of it, the receiver is having problems getting the good signal from the satellites. The good news is that your PDA and GPS receiver are at least connected.
1. Just a suggestion, is your windscreen of your car coated? If it is, there should be a section of the windscreen that is not to allow signals to get in (mine is by the rear view mirror).
2. Try to stay in an open space with a clear view of the sky (not too close to a house, tree or anything elso blocking the signal). Then wait for approx 2minutes (although this may vary) whilst your tomtom gets a lock. Once it is locked, it should keep the lock.

This is my first post, so sorry if make a mess of it.
Anyway I have a similar problem with my rig.

I have a dell axim x50v with tomtom 5 and am trying to get a GlobalSat BT-338 to connect to the Tom tom 5 but just keeps saying no GPS device.
I have paired my receiver with my pda with no problem.
I have tryed the NMEA route at baud rate 4800 and at other setting as well but with no luck.
the best I can get is the small orange and black circle at the top right spin but it still say no GPS device.

The funny thing is, this same hardware (pda and gps receiver) works just great with tomtom 3.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

shokat, have you loaded the 5.21 update from TomTom's website?

Also, IME TT can take upto 2 minutes in navigator screen before it changes from NO DEVICE to GPS was lost...

Once you've got the spinning globe TT can see the device, so you should only be waiting for TT to update the message on the navigator screen.

Thanks for the reply getsurfers.

I have in the past left the small orange and black circle spinning and gone and made a cup of tea and no joking It's still spinning when I get back.

I didn't know about the 5.21 update. I'll download it and give it a bash and see what happen, ether way I'll let you all know how it went.

In the mean time, if there is any thing else any one can think that might help me. then I would be most grateful if you would post.

Thanks again.

Make sure when you attempt to get a lock you have a clear sky between the device and satellites.

Esp if your car has heated or reflective screen. Should get a lock fairly quickly outside.
