| | Hard Wiring Hi everyone,
Bought Ipaq 2210 and tomtom bluetooth software from Total PDA and i am very interested in having the cradle/charger hard wired in my car for permanent connection so i can just plug in / out the pda from cradle, without messing around with cables. Didnt know who to contact...obviously i dont want to do it myself lol . Any idea...?

| | I've just been quoted £30 (+vat) to professionally wire in my kit, but this is whilst having a mobile phone car kit installed. I think this is good value, against the length of time / cost of damage to car interior trim if I tried to do myself!.
Hope this gives a usefull guide price. |

| | Be VERY Careful! I had mine done 'professionally' and they wired it up to 12V instead of the 5V, result a broken IPAQ and TomTom, the garage eventually replaced the kit (four weeks) but it very nearly came to court and I was without it for about a month. Get them to put a volt meter on it to confirm its correct BEFORE you plug it in! |

| | Hi Thanks for all reply. After shop around, I managed to get someone who would like to do the hard wiring installation for £45. He sounds very friendly, i expect he knows what hes doing cos hes been doing lots of car kits installation before, hes working specially for the car kits and sat nav installation. The others are too expensive, one even quote me for £90. Just wonder, if you also need the audio installation so u can hear the PDA voice on your speaker...? or thats not really necessary..? |

| | Well I've just had my cradle installed, but haven't dared put my iPAQ in it yet following the voltage advice above.
I know the iPAQ needs 5v, but the tomtom cradle indicates a 12 - 24 v supply (which is what the installer connected it to). TT support have confirmed it should be connected to 12 - 24v, but didn't clarify if there's a "step down" circuit in the cradle to protect the iPAQ. I'm sure there must be - after all TT couldn't afford to replace many iPAQs, and must have tested the design & electronics before labelling them - nonetheless www.totalpda.co.uk support are clarifying the issue to get absolute certainty.
They've said they'll post the answer in this forum as a number of people have asked the same question.
As soon as I've tried the cradle out, I'll let you know how the audio works (without any amplification) - the iPAQ seems pretty loud at full volume when its loose on the dash / laid on the seat fabric - however the TT cradle has no vent / speaker hole to allow sound through, so may be muffled. I'll re-post as soon as I know for sure. |

| | Just had word back from tom tom, the cable that is supplied limits the voltage, they say it says /24 due to some trucks have up to 24.

| | Thanks for the post Stevie - although it's not crystal clear.
Can you confirm that the official tomtom cradle (specific to HP iPAQ 2210) as supplied by www.totalpda.co.uk , should be connected to a standard 12v supply in a car (as indicated by the labels on the cradle itself), and won't damage my iPAQ 2210 which requires a 5v imput (also suppied by www.totalpda.co.uk)?.
Sorry to keep badgering on this - I can't afford to replace / repair the unit, so want to be absolutely sure, after the doubt caused through this thread. | |
