Cool Checkpoint traffic cameras

Can someone tell me what section cameras and redlight cameras are and if they are are the same as speed cameras. I don't know if I should enable them all on my pda. I seem to get warnings for all 3 on certain roads as if they are all in the same spot. This probably sounds as confused as I am.

This new driver would be greatful for any enlightenment.!

PS.I am using checkpoint with tomtom navigator 5 on my PDA

Section cameras are cameras which measure the average speed between a set of cameras, and if your average exceeds the posted limit then a ticket is auto generated and dispatched. These are in place on the M1 j7-10, M25 j25-26, m25 j17-18.

A redlight camera will go off if you jump the lights, although the monitron is a speed camera on green, and switches to a red light camera when the lights change. Nasty things as the monitron is hard to see, and uses smaller markings - which you might not notice until you see the flash!!!!!

best bet, enable everything under the camera section upto 80 (ignore 90, 120 etc as these aren't valid limits in UK).

Red light cameras are triggered if you 'jump' a red light. There are also Gatso's positioned near some traffic lights which work in the normal way.

Section cameras are in pairs. You pass the first one and your reg number is taken with the time, you pass the second your reg is taken again with the time and your average speed is worked out. So for example, you may be doing 80mph and notice you pass a section camera, you slow up to 70mph but your average would be above 70.

There are cameras for each lane, say camera a to b in lane 1, c to d in lane 2 and e to f in lane 3. If you pass a then b or c then d or e then f and are exceeding the speed limit, you will receive a fine and points. There is however a loophole, if you pass say camera a and move to lane 2, camera d is not connected to camera a. I'll leave you to work out what that means.

I thought that loophole was closed when they updated the software to turn them into specs2

AFAIK the 'dodge' is still in existence (though I wouldn't care to risk points on my licence testing it) .

The largest collection of these cameras in the UK is the 26 mile stretch of the A77 in Ayrshire .
