Question ipaq 5550 - linking to PC / LAN / Internet using WiFI

Hi,
Just bought a brandnew 5550 and trying to link to my Sony PC which has a 802.11b wireless PCMCIA card installed. The latter works OK with other wireless devices.

The Help function and the Microsoft Pocket PC website both give screen detail that does not match what I see on the 5550!

The 5550 works fine when connecting to the PC and Internet using the USB link.

However, I cannot get any link to function when trying by wireless.

The Microsoft wireless update has been applied (after trying all other options.) - no change.
I have tried configuring the Internet and Work options but cannot find a Wireless option in the Modem settings - all that are there are Bluetooth, IR or Hayes on Com1.
All I can find in the Network cards is IPAQ USB Wireless Adaptor which has been set to an IP address which my network should recognise.

All that appears is:

Cannot connect - Unable to connect: you have no modem entries created and no network card present.
When I then click Settings ..... the whole sorry process starts again of selecting non-existent options!

Any help gratefully received!
Ray

Hi, have you made sure that the Wireless system on the IPAQ is set to the same SID as the network? also, if you are running any firewall on the PC, you may have to allow the IP address of the IPAQ access.

Thanks

Unhappy

I'm having a very similar problem with my HP 5550.

The Manual that comes on the HP CD is possibly the most useless example of its kind.

Is there no documentation out there that walks you through the business of setting up the Internet/LAN?

I too would welcome being pointed in any worthwhile direction.

PS What is the Microsoft wireless update?

HP have released a new driver for the WLAN on the 5550, its available at http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/20019.html

Please install that and let me know if that helps.

Pauld i will keep my eyes open for a tutorial for you.

Question

Hi,

Thanks for the response but I have just noticed that when the WiFi WLAN option is activated on the iPaq the LED does not flash. I know it did when it came out of the box.

Is the problem that the wireless has failed? If so, what are the options? (Product was purchased from www.totalpda.co.uk)

I agree about the documentation. It is the worst I have ever seen.

Hi have you tried rebooting the PDA?

take the stylis out of the PDA, and turn the PDA over, on the back near the bottom left is a small hole, place the stylis in the hole and push it in, then remove it, this should reboot the PDA, you wont loose any programes, let me know if this helps with the WLAN not working.

Hi Donald,

I have tried the reboot and no change occurs to the wireless LED. When I go into the Wireless Control and tap on the WLAN it goes Green and then if I re-tap it it goes Amber. On both taps the iPaq makes a noise but the LED does not come on. When I do the same for the Bluetooth button the blue light appears straight away.
Tapping the Bluetooth and WLAN buttons to turn both on at the same time just gets me the blue flashing light.

When I examine which programs are running in the above situation I can only see Wireless Control which implies no other program is interfering with the functionality?

Where to next?

Regards

I had the same problem with the Wifi LED not going on. I had to give the Ipaq a HARD RESET and then it worked fine.

Are you using a "peer to peer" or an "infrastructure" setup on your Sony Laptop?

How are you trying to get Internet access on the PDA - through Internet Connection Sharing or Activesync?

Hi Joni,

I took the battery off the back and re-inserted it. That has brought the LEDs back into action.

What I am trying to achieve is to have access both to my laptop and the Internet from the iPaq both over the wireless link.

The iPaq can now see the named wireless connection generated from the laptop. The laptop shows packets going out but never shows any packets being received.

Both devices are set to WEP (encryption) and Shared mode.
The SSID is set to the same 5 character value on the laptop and the iPaq.

As my laptop is linked onto a LAN which is in turn linked to an ADSL line, I was expecting the iPaq to be able to get through to the Internet over the wireless link. When I use Activesync in the cradle (USB) the iPag works in just this way as I can terminal server to a file server on my LAN and get to the Internet both from the iPAQ.

It looks like I need the easy tutorial as well.

Regards

I think what you will need to do is one of the following:

Setup Internet connection sharing on the laptop or use Activesync over Wireless Lan. This is tricky though. I have seen tutorials in the past, but I am not sure where I found them!
