Smile Internet via Wifi on Laptop and HP 6340

Hi,

Many apologies if this has been asked before - I have been looking through a few forums but cannot find the answer - it may be because what I am trying to do is so blatently obvious - not too sure.

Our small LAN at work has a 2MB ADSL connection. I have a wi-fi laptop but at present we have no wifi routers at work - just the normal hard wired variety.

I would like to be able to connect using wi-fi between my HP6340 and my laptop which I am hoping would allow me to use the web browser on my PDA at a more respectable speed than GPRS as I would be using the broadband connection that my laptop is using over the LAN.

In theory this seems straightforward enough but as with all things, in practise it isn't.

Would my laptop need to me acting as a wireless access point in order for the PDA to recognise it as a wifi network? I tried setting up my laptop as its own WPA wifi network and then tried connecting via the PDA but no luck.

Any pointers would be very helpful - highly likely I am being plain Monday morning stupid.

Best regards

ed

Welcome to our forums.
IN theory your laptop and PDA should both be set to connect to and ad-hoc network and not an access point. You would then need to enable internet connection sharing on your laptop to allow the PDA access. http://wifi.aximsite.com/wifi_net.html may help but I think it's more specific to access point setups but maybe worth a look anyway.

Thanks for the information - I will have a look at the link and see whether it has any pointers.
