Default is ipaq 3715 wifi different to the 5450?

hi folks, last year i had an ipaq 3715 that i used to great effect on my hols in florida for tomtom and wifi internet in the hotels.i sold it when i returned as i have no real use for one any other time.
so this year im going away again so i bought a used ipaq 5450 that i thought would do the same job as last time...however i am having great difficulty getting it to connect to my wifi in my home,if i go to status-advanced,it will find my router and i can select it from a drop down list, but after that nothing happens,if i go back to the status screen it still says scanning, the wifi triangle in the start tray is yellow and i cant connect to the internet.im pretty sure i didnt set my home router with any security so i would have expected the ipaq to be able to connect no problem?
i guess im doing something wrong but i need to make sure it works before i go away, the 3715 was very easy to use and connected easily.
i have checked the hp website and it has the most up to date firmware,100.5.39.
any help anyone??
cheers

Does the router have encryption?

Look on the CD for your iPaq, and there should be oddessy client. Install and try that instead of the inbuilt WM WIFI manager.

When you see the network, doesit have a padlock?

You may have to log into your router's admin pages, and look under security. If you enabled MAC filtering, the you need to add the new PDA's MAC into the allowed list.
