Connecting IPAQ 2210 to hotspot

I posted this question on the Pocket PC forum but now see it was more appropriate to this one.

I don't have wireless at home but bought a network card for my HP 2210 to connect to hotspots when out and about. The card installed OK, identifies available networks and allows me to associate with eg The Cloud and BT OpenZone. However when I click on Internet Explorer, instead of connecting to the home page for log-in it it reports page not available, check your associaton, IP and security settings.

I similarly get no data when I open the inbox (although both that and Internet explorer work OK under Active Sync in the home environment). I have tried the network card helpline and HP on-line help but to no avail. Can anyone help please? I have installed the latest firmware but it has not helped
